AKM EM-3242 Non-contact Magnetic Angle Sensor – Discontinued

EM-3242 has been discontinued. There is no direct replacement. However, GMW does offer Senis FAMAS – Magnetic Angle Sensor SENA2Dx, a digital contactless angle sensor with < 1 µs response time.


AKM’s (Asahi Kesai) EM-3242 non-contact magnet angular sensor detects the absolute angular position of a small magnet that is positioned above the device surface. The sensor has a full 360 degree angle range with a 10bit resolution.

The sensor incorporates IMC (Integrated Magnetic Concentrator) and CMOS Hall devices to sense the magnetic field vector along with the circuitry to convert the Hall sensor signal to an analog voltage proportional to the angle position of the magnet. The sensor is packaged in a very small 6 pin SOIC which is one on the smallest integrated angle sensors on the market. Only one external component is required for operation (a 0.1µF bypass capacitor). The EM-3242 is a low power sensor requiring 2.7 to 3.3V and 8mA.

The EM-3242 has replaced the EM-3241 that is obsolete

This kit is useful for evaluation the AKM EM-3242 angle sensor in non-contact angle position sensing applications.The sensor works well with smaller magnets, but with less air gap. See Reference Design

RD101_EM3242 for details. The kit contains a small 0.25” square assembled priUnted circuit board with a EM-3242 soldered onto the PCB and a flat ribbon cable. Also included is a SmCo24 0.25” diameter round magnet and a 0.25 square magnet that have been magnetized across their diameter.

AN_134KIT EM-3242 Non-Contact Angle Sensor with “In Range” Detection (obsolete)

This kit is useful for evaluation the AKM EM-3242 angle sensor in non-contact angle position sensing applications with "in range" detection. The Sensor incorporates an “Out of Range” detector circuit and will fault the output to zero volts when the magnet’s strength is either too weak or too strong, see Reference Design RD102_EM3242 for details. The kit contains a small 0.25” square assembled printed circuit board with a EM-3242 soldered onto the PCB and a flat ribbon cable. Also included is a SmCo24 0.25” diameter round magnet and a 0.25 square magnet that have been magnetized across their diameter.
