The Model 5451 Helmholtz Coil Electromagnet is a single axis coil pair arranged in Helmholtz geometry to give a relatively large volume of high uniformity magnetic field. The 5451 Helmholtz Coil Electromagnet has an aperture diameter of 300 mm (11.8 inch) with an operating range to 54 mTrms (540 Grms). The Helmholtz Coil Electromanget can be mounted in any orientation and with a mass of 100 kg (220 lbs) the 5451 can be integrated into experimental or test equipment. Since the Helmholtz Coil configuration is not magnetically shielded, magnetic and electrical conducting materials should be kept at least 1 m from the Electromagnet center to avoid excess distortion of the magnetic field within the working volume.

We offer several different power supplies for the 5451 electromagnet; the Sorensen switch mode, and the Danfysik high stability linear.
We offer Sorensen unipolar supplies which are suitable for applications were a DC field is required. They feature a stability of 0.05% over 8 hours and they are available with an optional IEEE-488 interface. Order part numbers:

For applications that require a bipolar power supply, we offer the Kepco BOP series. They feature stability of 0.02% over 8 hours, and an optional IEEE-488 interface may be installed either by GMW, or by the user at a later date. With two of the Kepco BOP 20V, 20A, supplies wired in parallel to acheive 20V, 40A will be sufficient for a 5451 Modest Power Bipolar System or for intermittent operation with air cooling. The two BOP20-20D wired in parallel will not achieve maximum power of the 545.

The GMW 231HC Bipolar Current Amplifier provides a true bipolar current source for the 5451 to achieve a High Power Bipolar System. The 231HC integrates a Copley Controls Gradient Amplifier Model 231HC with capacitor bank, auxiliary power supply, cooling fans and National Instruments USB-6251 data acquisition and control module in a 19 inch rack mounting cabinet.
